Arsenal legend Ian Wright has risked the wrath of his former club’s supporters after claiming that Tottenham Hotspur “deserve” to win the Premier League title this season due to their refusal to give up on the chase.
Chelsea have lost two of their last four games in the Premier League, whilst seven straight league victories for Spurs has seen Mauricio Pochettino’s side move to within four points of the Blues with six games of the season to play.
Arsenal, however, are currently languishing down in sixth position in the table, some 14 points behind their London rivals, who appear almost certain to finish above the Gunners this time around.
Wright remains a hero at Arsenal after scoring 128 league goals for the club between 1991 and 1998, but the 53-year-old has seemingly risked that reputation by lavishing praise on the Gunners’ bitter rivals.
He told The Sun:
“If Tottenham win their first league title since 1961, nobody could say they don’t deserve to be champions. Everyone was resigned to it being a procession rather than a race when Chelsea kicked off this month with a ten-point lead at the top.
“But while everyone else chucked in the towel and handed the crown to the Blues, Spurs have refused to abandon the chase. Everything about them impresses me; the players, manager, their attitude and the fantastic football they produce for their fans.”
Both Arsenal and Tottenham are in FA Cup semi-final action this weekend, with the Gunners facing Manchester City one day after Spurs tackle Chelsea.
