According to The Evening Standard, Crystal Palace are keen on a move for Liverpool’s Dominic Solanke as they look to boost their firepower going into the second half of the season – such a signing could have an impact akin to that of Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s last season.
What’s the word?
Well, The Evening Standard reports that the youngster is on Roy Hodgson’s January radar with a loan move on the cards – the 71-year-old would surely be hoping that the former Chelsea man can be an upgrade on the apathetic Jordan Ayew, who is enduring a torrid spell at Selhurst Park this season after making a temporary switch from Swansea.
The 21-year-old is yet to feature for Liverpool this season as they mount a serious title challenge to Manchester City and has slipped behind Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi in the pecking order – surely the young striker will be tempted into a loan to Palace in the New Year after seeing the success of his countryman, Loftus-Cheek.
What would he bring to Palace?
Two things, crucially: a lethal finishing touch and a hunger to prove his quality. The Eagles’ current options have looked lacklustre, with Ayew looking particularly disinterested and Alexander Sorloth seemingly lacking the intelligence or confidence to get himself into the dangerous areas.
Solanke, meanwhile, has a goalscorer’s instinct coupled with raw power and pace that would surely be an asset to any team outside the top six – he has impressed with the Under 23s this season as he bags two in two.
The Selhurst Park outfit need someone who can bring the best out of the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Max Meyer, who would both benefit from having a focal point to hit again who can also reliably put the ball in the net.
Regardless, upgrades are needed urgently in the new year despite Hodgson stating that he is satisfied with his current attacking options.
