Mikael Lustig has been offered a ‘bumper’ deal to leave Celtic this summer, as reported by The Scottish Sun.
What’s the story?
With the Swede’s contract set to expire at the end of the season his future at Celtic Park is in serious doubt, with no word on whether the club or the player will decide to extend his stay at the Hoops.
The paper say he has other lucrative options on the table, with Malmo in his homeland at the front of the queue.
According to the report the contract on offer would make him one of the country’s top earners, with AIK Stockholm also showing interest in bringing him back to Sweden.
Is it time for him to leave Celtic?
Regular watchers of Celtic will know that Lustig’s game has definitely regressed in the last 18 months, and now at 32 years of age he is no longer the player that provided so much stability on the Hoops’ right flank for years.
What if Celtic were to actually fail in their bid for the ‘treble treble’? A Celtic fan dicsusses in the video below…
He is definitely coming towards the end of his career at Celtic as a regular starter, but perhaps retaining him on a back-basis could be the best thing for all parties.
His experience and leadership is invaluable to the squad and it shouldn’t go unnoticed that Scott Brown insists on having his vice-captain alongside him when lifting trophies.
It might be more difficult to replace his presence than many expect and although he’s been heavily criticised by supporters this season, there’s an element of ‘be careful what you wish for’ when it comes to his departure.
Will Celtic be able to go out and sign an international defender in his prime to replace him? The jury is certainly out on that one.
